Program Highlights
This diploma program is created to prepare students for careers in the education sector. Its goal is to equip learners with the skills and knowledge required to seek employment as an Educational Assistant. Throughout the program, students are introduced to key theories, disciplines, and best practices related to child development, learning processes, teaching methods, classroom management, and student supervision. The program also explores the various responsibilities Educational Assistants hold in both special education and early childhood settings.
Career Opportunities
This program equips students with a broad set of skills and knowledge needed to support elementary and secondary school teachers and counsellors. Graduates of the Educational Assistant program can find employment in public and private elementary and secondary schools, special education schools, and treatment centres.
CORE COURSES
Upon completion of the program, participants must demonstrate the following core competencies:
Keyboarding
Minimum typing speed of 25 words per minute.
Office Skills
Internet Fundamentals, basic proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, and Punctuation and Writing Skills.
Operating Systems
Basic proficiency in a Windows operating system.
Word Processing
Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word.
Spreadsheets
Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
Database Management
Basic proficiency in Microsoft Access.
Graphics/Presentation
Basic proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint.
Educational Assistant
Child Development and Human Behaviour, Skills for the Effective Teacher Aide, Building Children’s Self-Esteem, How Children Learn, Classroom Management Strategies, Overview of Teaching Techniques, Student Supervision, Early Childhood Education & After-School Day Care Programs, Language and Other Barriers, Teacher Aide in Special Education Settings, Children, Families, and Society, Supporting Abused Children, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Educational Assistant Practicum.
